Preparing your boat for boating season

Getting your boat ready before the first busy weekend can prevent common on-the-water problems later. Use this checklist before you launch on Old Hickory Lake, Percy Priest Lake, or the Cumberland River near Nashville, TN.

    • Confirm your registration is current and onboard.
    • Check life jackets (correct sizes, good condition) and keep them accessible.
    • Test horn/whistle and navigation lights.
    • Verify fire extinguisher charge and expiration date.
    • Restock first-aid kit, throwable device, and basic tools.

    • Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and tighten connections.
    • Charge and load-test batteries; replace weak ones before the season starts.
    • Test bilge pump, blower, and all switches.
    • Power up electronics (VHF, chartplotter, depth finder) and update software if needed.

    • Look for cracked fuel lines, loose clamps, and fuel odors.
    • Replace the fuel/water separator (and carry a spare if you can).
    • Check oil level, coolant (if applicable), and inspect belts/hoses.
    • Inspect the prop for dings and ensure the prop nut is secure.
    • Start the engine on the trailer or at the dock and confirm a strong water stream.

    • Inspect the hull for damage and check through-hulls and seacocks.
    • Confirm the drain plug is present and the gasket is in good shape.
    • Check trailer tires, bearings, lights, winch strap, and safety chains.
    • Replace worn dock lines and fenders before they fail.

    • Top off fuel and check weather and wind before you launch.
    • Share your float plan with someone on shore.
    • Keep your phone charged and store it in a dry case.
